CMNA manufactures precision lead shielding products for the handling, storage, and transport of medical isotopes — built to the same nuclear-grade quality standards (ISO 9001:2015, CSA N299.3-16) that govern our work for Canada’s nuclear power industry.

CMNA manufactures precision medical isotope shielding in-house — from consulting, to design, manufacturing and delivery.

We specialize in delivering high-quality custom solutions with excellent customer service at a fair price. We offer 100% made-in-Canada solutions from custom stainless steel containers, to thousands of lead pigs, to lead research castles, to finding new, affordable, safe solutions for our customers.

Our process is simple:

  • We meet our customers where they are. Sometimes the design is done, and we simply build it. However most of the time we start with a customer idea and turn it into reality.
  • With a concept, we draw the piece, ensuring every customer need is met.
  • With the drawing approved, we build. Turnaround time can be as fast three weeks for some custom cabinets and flasks depending on the raw materials necessary.

Custom Solutions for Medical Isotopes

CMNA builds custom lead solutions for the medical isotope providers from the ground up. If it involves shielding we can manufacture it — using whatever combination of process the design requires.

What makes Canada Metal North America unique is our world leading expertise in lead manufacturing. We can almost always find a solution to meet our customers’ needs through:

  • Casting — custom-shaped lead components poured to precise geometries, including complex internal cavities
  • Machining — CNC precision on cast or extruded lead for tight-tolerance features (bores, threads, seating faces, closures)
  • Filling — lead poured into customer-supplied or CMNA-fabricated containers and housings
  • Rolling — lead sheet and plate formed to spec for cladding, liners, and flat shielding components
  • Extrusion — custom lead profiles and shapes for specialized equipment
  • Painting/coating – the ability to get pieces painted or quoted in house reduces lead times and reduces customer costs.

Because we don’t import our shielding and fabricate all lead components in house, we can adjust on the fly if a customer needs something and not lose any time.

Custom Builds

For applications requiring a stainless or painted carbon steel outer shell or housing — carts, cabinets, containment vessels, transport equipment — CMNA designs, builds and delivers custom stainless-steel solutions from scratch, engineered around the required lead shielding inside and the constraints of the customers. This includes shielded carts, storage cabinets, and handling equipment built to a customer’s exact facility and workflow requirements.

Example applications

  • Mobile shielded transport carts for isotopes and radioactive waste
  • Type A containers: small and large
  • Custom dose calibrator shielding and housings
  • Isotope storage and handling equipment
  • One-off or low-volume shielded components that don’t fit a standard product line
  • Hot cell shielding design and fabrication

This custom-engineering capability is a core differentiator: most competitors in this space sell fixed catalog products, while CMNA’s in-house casting, machining, and fabrication capability means we can design and build to a customer’s exact specification, whether that’s a single prototype, custom shielding for a new hotcell, or a full production run of hundreds of custom containers.
